Black shower mold: urgent professional or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the grout in the corner of our shower. I thought it was just dirt, but it won't scrub off and the damp, earthy smell in the room is getting stronger, especially after my morning shower. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm worried it's starting to spread behind the tiles.
How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is this something I can handle myself with a cleaning product from Day to Day?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of bathroom mold proliferation, and in the UAE's climate, it requires immediate attention. The combination of high humidity, constant air conditioning creating temperature differentials, and older building ventilation systems in areas like Bur Dubai creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. The fact it won't scrub off and is accompanied by a persistent damp, earthy odor strongly indicates a deeper, established growth, likely penetrating the porous grout and potentially the substrate behind the tiles.
Attempting a DIY clean with a generic supermarket product is not recommended. These often contain bleach, which only superficially removes the visible discoloration on the surface but does not address the root hyphae (the fungal roots) embedded within the materials. This provides a temporary fix at best, and the mold will return rapidly, often worse than before. The risk of spread behind the tiles is very real. This can lead to structural damage to drywall and underlying structures, and significantly compromise indoor air quality, which can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues. For a case like yours, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the walls without unnecessary demolition. We adhere to UAE standards for indoor environmental quality and can determine if remediation is required. True remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and the application of specialized EPA-approved antimicrobials to eliminate the colony at its source.
