Mold on clothes: health risks for young children?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from mold. I’ve just pulled out their winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and noticed several of the sweaters have black spots and that damp, earthy smell won't go away. What specific health risks should I be most concerned about for a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old?

The mold you've described on stored winter clothes is a significant health concern, particularly for young children. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, textiles in storage are highly vulnerable. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus, both of which produce mycotoxins and allergens.

For a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old, the primary risks are respiratory. Their developing lungs and immune systems are more susceptible. Exposure can trigger allergic reactions, persistent coughing, wheezing, and exacerbate asthma. Mycotoxins from species like Stachybotrys can cause more severe inflammatory responses. Direct contact with the spores on the clothing can also lead to skin irritation and dermatitis.

Do not attempt to wash or handle these clothes within the living areas, as this will aerosolize the spores and contaminate your entire home. The presence of a persistent damp, earthy smell is a clear indicator of an active infestation, which often means the problem extends beyond the visible items to the storage room itself—likely due to condensation or a minor water intrusion.

This situation requires professional assessment. DIY methods are insufficient and can worsen contamination. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the moisture source and air sampling to determine spore count and species, which is critical for assessing health risks. Following UAE Green Building regulations and DHA guidelines, we perform contained removal and hygienization of affected contents.
