How to safely remove black mold from wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I moved the furniture to clean and was shocked by the spread. We keep the AC on most of the time but the room sometimes feels damp, especially since the humidity picked up last month. What's the best way to treat this mold myself, and is it safe to stay in the room while we clean it?

Based on the description of the spread behind your sofa, this is a significant growth likely fueled by our local Dubai climate. The constant AC use can create cold spots on walls where condensation forms, especially when high external humidity meets cool interior surfaces, providing the perfect environment for mold.

For a small, contained area (less than 10 square feet), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, given the duration and the fact it was hidden, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact species and the underlying moisture source, which is critical for permanent removal.

For DIY, safety is paramount. You must wear an N-95 respirator, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by sealing the room from the rest of the home. For non-porous surfaces like painted drywall, a solution of detergent and water can be used for cleaning. Avoid bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can exacerbate moisture issues. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely. However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or insulation, they must be removed and replaced, as mold cannot be fully removed from them.

Due to the health risks of disturbing mold spores and the high probability of an unresolved moisture issue, I recommend a professional assessment. Our climate makes DIY solutions temporary at best.
