Black mold in bathroom: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these ugly black spots spreading on the ceiling in the corner above our shower in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I just call my landlord straight away?

Based on the description of recurring black spots spreading on the ceiling in a high-humidity area like Jumeirah Village Circle, this is a classic case of condensation-related mold growth, exacerbated by Dubai's intense humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning.

While small, isolated spots can sometimes be addressed with a DIY approach using a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, your situation—characterized by spreading and recurrence—indicates a persistent moisture issue. This suggests the problem is likely behind the ceiling surface or within the building envelope, which is beyond the scope of a surface clean.

Under UAE tenancy law, the structural integrity and habitability of the property are the landlord's responsibility. A recurring mold issue caused by inadequate ventilation, insulation, or a potential leak falls under this category. You should formally notify your landlord in writing, detailing the issue and requesting a professional assessment and remediation.

Attempting a DIY fix could temporarily mask the problem but will not address the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth and potential health risks from prolonged spore exposure. For a proper resolution, the source of moisture must be identified and controlled.

For a comprehensive inspection and certified remediation that identifies the exact mold species and moisture source, I strongly recommend involving a professional service. Our team at Saniservice specializes in this, using thermal imaging and moisture meters to diagnose hidden problems. We can provide a certified report for your landlord and execute the necessary containment and removal procedures.
