Can I clean black mold from my closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making my bedroom closet smell damp. I finally pulled everything out and found a patch of black mold on the back wall. It’s been crazy humid lately and I think that’s the cause. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company?

While a small, isolated patch of mold (less than 10 square feet) can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, the presence of black mold and its location relative to your AC unit in Dubai's climate necessitates a cautious approach. The damp smell indicates a moisture issue, which is the root cause; simply cleaning the visible mold without addressing the source will result in rapid regrowth.

In the UAE, the extreme humidity and constant AC operation create perfect conditions for condensation, often within the walls or ductwork itself. The mold on your closet wall is likely a symptom of this. Cleaning with bleach is not recommended by modern remediation standards. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots, and its high water content can actually feed the problem. For porous materials, professional-grade antimicrobial solutions and specialized techniques are required.

Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment. For your safety and to ensure the problem is resolved permanently, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified technicians use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source—whether it's a leaking AC drain line, insufficient insulation causing condensation, or another issue—and then perform the remediation following IICRC standards.

Given the specifics of your case, I recommend you contact our team for a comprehensive assessment.
