How to safely remove mold and prevent it in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has a persistent damp smell, especially after we run the AC all night. I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall and found a patch of black mold behind it. We’ve lived here for five years and this is the first time I’ve seen this. What’s the best way to clean this safely and how can I prevent it from coming back with our humidity?

The black mold you've discovered behind the wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai villas, primarily due to our extreme humidity and the condensation generated by AC systems. This creates a perfect environment for mold growth, especially in areas with poor air circulation like behind furniture.

For safe removal, I strongly advise against DIY cleaning with bleach, as it can release harmful spores and is ineffective on porous surfaces like wood and drywall. The recommended protocol is to first lightly mist the area with water to suppress spores, then clean with a HEPA vacuum. Follow this by scrubbing with a detergent solution and thoroughly drying the area. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. In this case, the constant cooling cycle likely causes condensation to form on the cold wall behind the wardrobe, which is then trapped.

Prevention is key. Maintain a consistent AC temperature (around 22-24°C) to minimize drastic temperature swings and condensation. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to guarantee proper drainage and efficiency. Most importantly, improve air circulation by leaving a 2-3 inch gap between furniture and exterior walls. A dehumidifier can also be highly effective in managing indoor humidity levels.

Given that the mold is in a children's bedroom and has likely been growing unseen for some time, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count and species, which is vital for assessing health risks. Our remediation teams are certified under Dubai Municipality guidelines to ensure safe, complete removal.
