Is black mold in my closet making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it now, probably because it’s been so humid lately. It’s a small patch, maybe the size of my hand, but it looks pretty dark and furry. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or should I call a professional cleaning service right away?

Based on your description, it is highly plausible that the black mold growth in your closet is contributing to your children's coughing. The dark, furry appearance is characteristic of active fungal growth, and its location in a closet suggests a persistent humidity issue, which is common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and year-round air conditioning use. AC units can create significant condensation, and when this dampness is trapped in a poorly ventilated space like a closet, it creates an ideal environment for mold spores to colonize.

While a small patch the size of your hand may seem manageable, I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of mycotoxins and spores, potentially worsening the indoor air quality and respiratory symptoms.

For health and safety, a professional inspection is the recommended course of action. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and air sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is crucial for assessing health risks and planning an effective remediation strategy. DIY attempts often miss the underlying cause, resulting in recurring problems.

Given the potential health impact on your children, I recommend you call our experts for a definitive assessment. Please contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
