Is shower mold a DIY fix or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots forming along the grout in the shower. It hasn't spread much, but with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's going to get worse behind the tiles. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately, or can I try a DIY cleaning solution first?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah apartment, this is a very common issue we encounter in Dubai. The persistent high humidity, coupled with year-round air conditioning that creates significant temperature differentials, leads to condensation—the primary fuel for mold growth in bathrooms.

For a few small, superficial spots on the grout, a DIY approach can be a reasonable first step. I recommend using a dedicated, non-abrasive commercial grout cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub gently with a soft brush to avoid damaging the grout's sealant. It is critical to improve ventilation during and after showers by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes and wiping down wet surfaces to remove standing moisture.

However, your concern about growth behind the tiles is valid. If the spots reappear quickly after a thorough cleaning, if there is a persistent musty odor, or if you notice any wall softening or cracking, this indicates a more serious, subsurface problem. In such cases, a DIY fix is insufficient and can even exacerbate the issue by spreading spores. The high humidity of the UAE climate allows mold to proliferate rapidly within wall cavities, especially if there is a hidden leak from plumbing.

For a definitive assessment, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use borescopes to inspect behind tiles and moisture meters to detect hidden dampness that isn't visible. This is crucial to determine the full extent of the contamination and identify the moisture source, which must be rectified for any remediation to be successful. If the growth is more than a few small spots, or if you have any health concerns, please contact our team for a professional assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
