Can I remove bathroom mold myself with bleach in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in Jumeirah Park villa doesn’t have a window and I’ve just spotted a bunch of black spots in the grouting between the tiles. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago, and I’m worried it’s making my allergies act up. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach solution from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in the UAE, I strongly advise against using a standard bleach solution for the mold issue in your Jumeirah Park villa. While bleach may appear to remove the superficial black discoloration, it is ineffective and potentially hazardous for several technical reasons. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating deep into the porous grout. It also fails to address the underlying moisture problem and can release harmful chlorine fumes, especially dangerous in a small, enclosed, windowless bathroom with poor ventilation.

The persistent humidity in Dubai is the core of the problem. Year-round air conditioning creates significant condensation and elevated moisture levels, which, when trapped in a room without windows, creates an ideal environment for mold proliferation. Simply wiping the surface will not provide a long-term solution.

For a small, contained area, you may attempt cleaning with a dedicated, non-bleach, EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, ensuring you wear appropriate PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). However, given that the problem is recurring and you are experiencing allergic reactions—which indicate the potential presence of airborne spores—this situation warrants a professional assessment.

Our company, Saniservice, conducts comprehensive inspections using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of contamination. We follow strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for remediation to ensure the health and safety of occupants. For a definitive solution and to safeguard your family's health, I recommend calling our experts for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com.
