Can I clean this closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been incredibly humid the last few weeks. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity, exacerbated by an interior cold spot from year-round air conditioning. The wall facing the outside is likely a thermal bridge, where warm, humid air is condensing on the cooler interior surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold, especially on organic materials like drywall and clothing.
While a small, surface-level patch might be manageable, I strongly advise against using bleach. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces, can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. Vinegar is a slightly better alternative for non-porous surfaces but will not address the root cause: the moisture issue. In the UAE, improper handling can spread spores and lead to a much larger contamination. For any growth on structural elements (walls, ceilings), a professional inspection is recommended.
