Urgent to clean moldy clothes from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be constantly leaking a little water into the closet where the unit is housed. I’ve just pulled out some winter clothes I had stored in there and found a bunch of them, especially a couple of my wool jackets, covered in black and green fuzzy spots. It's been so humid lately I didn't think much of the dampness until now. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and should I be worried about the spores spreading to the rest of my bedroom?

Based on your description, this situation requires immediate professional attention. The black and green fuzzy growth is a clear indicator of active mold colonization, likely due to the constant moisture from the AC leak combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity, which creates a perfect breeding ground.

Mold spores are microscopic and become airborne upon disturbance. Handling the contaminated clothes in your bedroom has almost certainly released a significant number of spores, risking cross-contamination to other areas. Wool and other organic fabrics are particularly susceptible as they provide a food source for the mold.

Do not attempt to clean these items with conventional methods. Improper cleaning can further aerosolize the spores and embed the stains. For valuable garments, a specialized restoration cleaner with expertise in mold remediation is required to assess salvageability.

The urgency is twofold. First, the source of the moisture—the leaking AC unit—must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent ongoing mold growth within the closet and the AC system itself, which could then circulate spores throughout your apartment. Second, the affected area and any cross-contaminated surfaces require professional assessment and hygienization.

We strongly recommend a professional mold inspection. Our certified technicians can conduct air and surface sampling to determine the spore count and species present, which is critical for designing an effective remediation protocol. This is not just about the clothes; it's about ensuring the air quality in your home is safe.
