Recurring black mold in closet: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a recurring patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. I think it’s because of the AC unit on the other side of that wall. I tried wiping it with bleach, but it came back after a couple of weeks. Is this something I can handle myself with a special cleaner, or should I call a professional company, and what’s the typical cost for a job like this in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of recurrent mold growth driven by a persistent moisture source, which is a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning. The fact that it returned after a bleach wipe is a major red flag; bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphal roots embedded within porous materials like drywall.

The location you describe, adjacent to an AC unit, strongly suggests the cause is either condensation from a poorly insulated AC duct or a refrigerant line running inside that wall cavity, or a small leak from the unit itself. This creates a constant source of moisture that the mold is feeding on.

For a recurring problem like this, a DIY approach is not advisable. Surface cleaning is ineffective and can inadvertently spread spores. The wall likely needs to be opened to inspect the cavity, identify and rectify the moisture source (e.g., insulating the cold line, sealing the duct), and then properly remediate the contaminated building materials.

In the UAE, professional mold remediation follows strict guidelines based on international standards like the IICRC S520. A reputable company will first conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and potentially air quality testing, to diagnose the exact cause. The cost for a localized job like this in Dubai can vary, but you should expect a range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, which would cover inspection, containment, removal of affected materials, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and verification that the issue is resolved.

Given the health risks associated with chronic black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) exposure and the technical requirement to fix the AC-related moisture issue, I strongly recommend a professional inspection.
