How to remove and prevent closet mold from AC?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a few black speckles on the clothes and the wall itself, and it's definitely mold. It's the worst during the summer when the AC is running constantly. I'm worried it's because of the temperature difference between the cold room and the humid outside air. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back next season without having to run my AC less?

The mold growth on your closet's exterior wall is a classic case of condensation-induced microbial proliferation, a common issue in Dubai due to the extreme temperature differential between a chilled interior and the hot, humid external environment. This creates a dew point on the cold wall surface, providing the moisture necessary for mold colonies to establish.
For immediate remediation, first assess the extent. Surface mold on non-porous materials like painted drywall can be cleaned with a solution of detergent and warm water, followed by disinfection with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). However, wearing an N95 mask and gloves is non-negotiable to prevent spore inhalation. For porous materials like clothing, dry cleaning or hot washing is required. If the mold growth is extensive (covering more than 1 square meter), or if you suspect penetration into the wall cavity, this is a serious case requiring professional inspection and remediation. Disturbing large colonies without proper containment can lead to widespread contamination. Prevention is critical and requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, improve air circulation within the closet. Leave doors ajar and ensure it is not overpacked. Secondly, and most importantly, address the condensation itself. The wall is acting as a cold bridge. The most effective solution is to improve the insulation of that exterior wall to minimize the temperature difference. Additionally, using a desiccant dehumidifier in the room, even with the AC running, can significantly reduce the ambient humidity level that fuels the problem. Simply running the AC less is not a viable solution in our climate. For a definitive diagnosis of the mold species and a engineered remediation plan that complies with UAE health and safety standards, I recommend a professional assessment.
