Can I clean mold with bleach or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall and the humidity has been so high lately I can feel it. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

While bleach is a common household disinfectant, its use on mold is highly discouraged, especially in the UAE's unique climate. The high humidity and constant use of air conditioning in Dubai create a perfect environment for mold growth, often indicating a deeper moisture issue.

Bleach is primarily effective on non-porous surfaces and only removes the surface discoloration of mold, not the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or concrete. Furthermore, the chlorine in bleach rapidly evaporates, leaving behind a significant amount of water. This moisture can actually be absorbed by the building material, fueling further mold growth behind the surface, which is a severe risk in your situation behind the wardrobe.

Your description of a patch on the wall combined with high, palpable humidity strongly suggests a persistent moisture problem. This could be due to condensation from the AC unit, a hidden pipe leak, or capillary rising damp—all common issues here. Attempting a DIY clean with bleach will only provide a temporary visual fix while the hidden colony continues to proliferate, potentially compromising your indoor air quality and the building's structural integrity.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. Our certified inspectors use tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of moisture and the full extent of the contamination, which is almost always larger than what is visible. We then provide a detailed remediation protocol following industry best practices.
