Can I clean toddler's room mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom AC unit in our villa in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been slowly growing since the last time we had the humidity spike a few weeks ago. I’m worried about my toddler sleeping in there – is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of a recurring AC leak and visible black, fuzzy mold growth on the wall, this is a situation that warrants professional attention, especially given the presence of a toddler. While small, isolated spots of surface mold can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, your case involves a persistent moisture source.

The black, fuzzy appearance is characteristic of a mold colony, and disturbing it through improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing the airborne concentration your child could inhale. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster; it only bleaches the surface color and does not address the hyphae (root-like structures) growing within the material. The leak from the AC unit must be identified and repaired by a certified HVAC technician first; otherwise, the mold will simply return.

In Dubai's high-humidity climate, AC units are a constant source of condensation, making them a prime location for mold growth when not properly maintained. A professional inspection is crucial to determine the extent of the contamination, identify the exact species of mold (e.g., Stachybotrys chartarum, or other allergenic types), and develop a safe remediation protocol. This involves containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration devices to capture spores, and the proper antimicrobial treatment of affected materials.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is resolved at its source, I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment, including air and surface sampling, and provide a detailed remediation plan.
