Best dehumidifier for a damp walk-in closet?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in our Mirdif villa always feels damp, and I just found black spots growing on a couple of leather handbags I stored in the back. It’s been like this since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, even though we run the AC constantly. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber to put in a closet to stop this from happening?

The issue you're describing in your Mirdif villa is extremely common in Dubai due to our unique climate. The combination of high external humidity and constant, often aggressive, air conditioning creates significant condensation issues, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like walk-in closets. The black spots on your leather goods are a clear indicator of active mold growth, which is a symptom of a persistent moisture problem, not the root cause.

While a dehumidifier can be a helpful temporary measure, it is a secondary solution. For a closet, a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier (e.g., models from Ebac or Meaco) is superior to traditional refrigerant models in our climate, as they perform better in the cooler temperatures of an air-conditioned space. Silica gel-based moisture absorbers are a passive alternative but require frequent replacement and are ineffective for an ongoing issue of this nature.

However, simply placing a device in the closet does not address the source of the moisture. The dampness is likely due to a combination of factors: negative air pressure from your AC system drawing in humid air, potential micro-leaks in the ductwork, insufficient insulation in the external walls, or condensation forming on cold water pipes running through the closet space. The mold growth on your belongings also indicates that airborne spores have already colonized the area, posing a potential risk to your health and other contents.

For a definitive solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified experts use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the humidity intrusion. We can then recommend targeted remediation, which may include HVAC balancing, duct sealing, or improving ventilation, followed by certified mold removal and hygienization of the affected area to ensure the environment is safe and your property is protected.
