Safely removing black mold in my Mirdif villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We're in a villa in Mirdif and with all the humidity lately, the wall feels damp to the touch. What's the best and safest way to get rid of it myself without putting my family at risk?

Given the symptoms you've described and the presence of visible black mold, this is a situation that requires immediate and careful attention. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during the summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in areas with poor ventilation or pre-existing moisture issues, like a damp wall behind a wardrobe.

For a small, contained area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt a careful cleanup. However, your family's health is the priority. The coughing is a significant indicator of exposure. Before you begin, it is critical to isolate the area. Seal off the room from the rest of the villa using plastic sheeting and tape. You must wear personal protective equipment: an N95 respirator mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles.

Do not dry scrub or vacuum, as this will aerosolize the spores. Lightly mist the mold with water to suppress spores, then clean the area with a detergent solution. A recommended antimicrobial solution for the UAE market is a mixture of white vinegar and water or a specialized mold remover. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely. Use dehumidifiers and fans, but ensure the spores are not blown into other rooms. The underlying moisture issue must be addressed; this is often a leak or, more commonly in Dubai villas, condensation from year-round AC use creating a temperature differential on walls.

I must strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY methods often address the visible growth but miss the hidden infestation within the wall cavity. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and HEPA filtration equipment can significantly increase the spore count in your home's air, exacerbating your children's respiratory issues. In the UAE, professional remediation companies like Saniservice follow strict protocols for containment, removal, and air scrubbing to ensure the problem is solved safely and completely.

For the safety of your family, please do not proceed without a professional assessment. Call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan.
