Black AC dust making me sick: clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust coming out of the vents in the master bedroom, and my throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings. I wiped some of it away from the vent cover but it’s a lot darker and more speckled than just regular dust. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning company to handle it properly?

Based on your description, this is a serious indoor air quality concern that warrants immediate professional attention. The black, speckled substance you're describing is highly indicative of microbial growth, likely a combination of mold and bacteria, thriving within your AC ductwork. In Dubai's climate, the constant cycling between extreme outdoor heat and cool, humid air inside AC units creates massive condensation, which is the perfect breeding ground for such contaminants.

Attempting to clean this yourself with a bleach spray is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like ductwork, can corrode AC components, and its fumes mixed with mold spores can create toxic vapors, exacerbating your scratchy throat and other respiratory issues. This is not a case for a standard AC cleaning company; it requires a certified mold inspection and remediation specialist.

We must identify the species of mold present (e.g., Stachybotrys, Aspergillus) through professional air and surface sampling to understand the health risk. The remediation process involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials specifically designed for HVAC systems, not household cleaners.

Your symptoms are a clear indicator that the contamination is affecting your health. For a proper assessment and resolution, I recommend you contact our team at Saniservice. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Our certified experts will conduct a thorough inspection, including air quality testing, and execute a safe, effective remediation protocol to restore your indoor air quality.
