is black window mold causing my kids' cough??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the black stuff growing along the edges of our bedroom window frames. I just noticed it today after pulling back the curtains; it’s been really humid in our villa in Jumeirah since the last bout of rain. What’s the safest way to clean this off myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

Black window mold is a likely contributor to your kids' persistent cough. In Dubai's humid climate, especially after rain, condensation on windows creates a perfect environment for mold. The spores released into the air are a common irritant, causing coughing, congestion, and worsening allergies in children.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the visible growth is often just the "fruit" of a larger colony; the main organism can be inside the wall or frame if there's persistent dampness.

Given that children are affected, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the species. True "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys) is rare, but other common black molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus can still cause significant respiratory issues. A company with a microbiology lab can take samples to identify the specific type and its concentration, which dictates the correct remediation method.

For a proper assessment and to ensure it's fully resolved, you can call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. Addressing the source of the moisture, such as improving ventilation or using a dehumidifier, is also crucial to prevent it from returning.
