How to treat and prevent black mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC is running constantly. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent it from coming back since the humidity is such a constant battle here?

Black mold in a humid climate like Dubai is a direct result of condensation forming on cold surfaces, especially walls with external exposure. For the small patch in your closet, you can treat it yourself by first scrubbing the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid spore inhalation.

Preventing its return is the critical part. The wall is likely cold from the constant AC, and humid air is condensing on it. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar. A small desiccant dehumidifier placed inside can help reduce the moisture level significantly. For the room itself, ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to minimize extreme temperature differentials that cause condensation. Check that the AC drain line is not clogged, as this can elevate indoor humidity.

In many Dubai villas, the underlying issue is insufficient insulation in external walls. If the problem persists or the affected area is larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and assess potential hidden growth within the wall cavity. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a culture test to confirm the mold type and the scope of remediation needed, which is crucial for ensuring it's properly addressed.
