Is bedroom AC mold causing my morning sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been blowing out a faint, damp smell for the last couple of months, and now I’m waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat every single morning. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in these dark, speckled patches. Is this black mold, and could it actually be causing these symptoms I’m having every day?

The dark patches on your filter are very likely mold, and given your symptoms, it's a strong possibility they are connected. The damp smell and daily morning symptoms—stuffy head and sore throat—are classic signs of exposure to mold spores circulating from your AC unit. In Dubai's climate, where AC runs year-round, condensation inside the ducts creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive.

While the term "black mold" is often used, many dark-colored molds can cause these irritating symptoms. The only way to confirm the species and its potential health impact is through a professional inspection and lab analysis of a sample. This is particularly advised since the issue is in your bedroom, where exposure is prolonged during sleep.

For a situation like this in Jumeirah, where high humidity exacerbates the problem, a simple filter replacement and coil cleaning may not be sufficient if growth is established deeper in the system. A proper inspection should assess the entire ductwork for moisture sources and microbial contamination. Verifiable before-and-after testing, not just a visual clean, is what differentiates a thorough remediation from a superficial service. Addressing the root moisture cause is essential to prevent it from quickly returning.
