Is this mold a DIY fix or major problem?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m starting to suspect it’s mold. I pulled our sofa away from the wall in the living room of our villa in Jumeirah and found a whole patch of black spots behind it, probably from humidity. I’m not sure if I should just scrub it off with bleach myself or if this is something serious enough to call a professional company for. How can I tell if this is a DIY fix or a major problem?

That black patch behind the sofa is a classic sign of condensation buildup, which is very common in Dubai villas due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The fact that it's visible and you've connected it to your kids' coughing means it's not a minor issue.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY clean with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth) can work if the moisture source is completely eliminated. However, the major problem is rarely the visible spot alone. Mold is a symptom of a moisture issue. If the wall is cold from AC and the humid air is condensing on it, simply cleaning the surface will not stop it from coming back.

Given the health symptoms and the hidden nature of the problem (you only found it by moving furniture), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the dampness within the wall cavity, which is almost always larger than the surface stain. In many Dubai villas, this requires addressing insulation or ventilation to prevent the condensation cycle.

A proper remediation would involve isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials if necessary, and treating the area with specialized antimicrobial solutions. For health-related cases, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the allergen levels have been reduced to a safe point.
