Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has been smelling damp, and I finally pulled everything out to find a huge patch of black mold spreading on the wall. It must have been growing slowly since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. I'm worried about health risks for my family, but I have no idea what this will cost to fix. Is this something I can tackle myself with cleaners from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company, and what’s a rough estimate for a job like this in Dubai?

That black patch on your villa's exterior wall is a classic Dubai issue, often caused by thermal bridging. The hot outdoor wall meets your air-conditioned interior, creating condensation inside the wall cavity that leads to mold. It’s rarely just a surface problem you can wipe away.

For a patch described as "huge," a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the water source within the wall. DIY cleaning with bleach or supermarket sprays often just bleaches the visible surface, leaving the root cause and hidden colony intact, so it returns within weeks.

Health risks depend on the species, which only a lab test can identify. For families, especially with children or anyone with allergies or asthma, improper disturbance can aerosolize spores throughout the home, significantly increasing exposure.

The cost for professional remediation in Dubai varies greatly by the extent of the damage behind the wall. It involves containment, safe removal of affected materials, addressing the moisture source, and antimicrobial treatment. For a contained closet, it's a targeted job. Always request a detailed assessment and quote; a reputable company will provide this transparently before any work begins.

Focus first on stopping the moisture. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently low humidity level and that the room is well-ventilated. Move belongings away from the wall until it's resolved.
