Is wardrobe mold a health risk for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has this built-in wardrobe on an interior wall that always feels a bit damp. I just pulled out our winter clothes and found a bunch of my sweaters and my husband’s suits covered in black and green fuzzy spots. With the humidity rising again, I’m really worried about my two young kids sleeping in the next room. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is this an immediate health risk we should leave the house for?

Yes, it is a health risk, especially for young children. The dampness and visible black/green growth indicate active mold, which releases spores and mycotoxins into the air your family breathes. Children are more vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems, potentially leading to worsened allergies, asthma flare-ups, persistent coughing, and sinus congestion.

The interior wall location in a Jumeirah villa points to a condensation issue, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. This isn't surface dirt; it's a colony that has penetrated porous materials like wool and cotton.

You should arrange a professional inspection within the next few days. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as improper agitation will aerosolize the spores, increasing exposure. For now, seal the affected clothing in plastic bags and remove them from the home to prevent further spread. While leaving the house entirely is often unnecessary, I would strongly recommend keeping the children out of that room and ensuring excellent ventilation throughout the villa until a specialist assesses the situation. A proper remediation plan, based on lab analysis of the mold type, is needed to resolve the moisture source and safely remove the growth.
