Is black mold causing my illness and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our suitcases. It's been so humid lately and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache that won't go away. Could this mold be the reason I'm feeling so unwell, and what's the safest way to clean it myself without making it worse?

Black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, can cause the symptoms you describe, especially persistent headaches and nasal congestion. In Dubai's high humidity, it thrives in poorly ventilated areas like closets. While not all black mold is toxic, its presence indicates a moisture problem that can support other allergens.

For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. Never use bleach, as it can release spores and doesn't address the root moisture. However, if the mold returns quickly, is in your AC system, or covers a larger area, a professional inspection is necessary to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the full extent. DIY cleaning can often disturb spores and spread the problem without proper containment.

Given your symptoms, a certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific species, which is the only way to confirm a direct link to your illness. In many villa communities, the persistent humidity from leaky AC drain lines or condensation within walls is a common, hidden culprit that requires expert diagnosis.
