How to remove and prevent black mold in shower ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the grout on the ceiling above the shower. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom fan doesn’t seem to be pulling much steam out anymore. What’s the most effective way to clean this off the ceiling and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially when bathroom ventilation is inadequate. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, which thrive on the soap scum and moisture in steamy bathrooms.
For cleaning, first identify if the mold is superficial. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous tiles, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applied for 15 minutes can scrub it away. For porous grout, a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover is more effective. Never mix chemicals. Prevention is critical. The core issue is excess humidity. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If it’s weak, have it serviced or replaced—this is often the permanent solution. Wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee after use. For severe, recurring mold, or if it covers more than a square foot, a professional inspection can identify if there’s a hidden moisture source or if the AC system is contributing to the humidity imbalance in the apartment. In some cases, applying a professional-grade antimicrobial sealant after a thorough cleaning can provide long-term protection. |
