Can I clean moldy jackets myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking for a while, and now I’ve pulled out my winter jackets to find black fuzzy spots all over a few of them. The smell is pretty strong in that whole corner. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar from Carrefour, or is it time to call one of those mold removal companies?

Black fuzzy spots and a strong smell indicate active mold growth, which is common with AC leaks in Dubai's humid climate. You can attempt to clean the jackets yourself if the infestation is light and the material is non-porous.
First, take the jackets outside to avoid spreading spores indoors. For surface mold on materials like leather or synthetic fibers, a solution of white vinegar can be effective. Gently brush off the dry spores, then wipe the area with undiluted vinegar and let it air dry completely in the sun. Do not attempt this on delicate fabrics like suede or silk. However, if the mold has deeply penetrated the fabric, the musty smell will likely persist, indicating that the mold's root system (hyphae) is still present. In this case, professional cleaning is necessary to truly salvage the items. The stronger concern is the source. An AC leak inside a closet has created a contained, damp environment ideal for mold. Simply cleaning the jackets does not address the mold growing on your walls, ceiling, or inside the AC unit itself, which will continue to cause problems. For a persistent leak and visible growth, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent of the damage behind walls and within the AC system, as mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor air quality. They can provide remediation and, crucially, identify the root cause of the leak to prevent recurrence. |
