AC mold making toddler sick: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. My toddler has been sneezing a lot more than usual and I’m starting to get worried. Is this something I can clean safely with bleach myself, or is it serious enough that I need to call a professional mold remediation company?

Given the leak and your toddler's symptoms, this warrants a professional assessment. In Dubai's high humidity, what's visible on the wall is often just the surface of a larger, hidden moisture problem within the wall cavity. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't address the root moisture or kill the mold's root structure, and it can be harmful to breathe in an enclosed space.

For a persistent leak and a child showing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the contamination behind the wall, and contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home. The goal is to verify the environment is returned to a safe, dry state, not just to clean a stain.

The Dubai climate means AC systems run year-round, and leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold. A pro can also inspect the AC unit itself, as internal mold growth is common in such cases and could be contributing to the airborne irritants affecting your toddler. Proper remediation includes fixing the leak, removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air, which a DIY approach cannot achieve.
