Is black mold dangerous for kids and how to remove it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy-looking mold in the corner of our kids' bedroom where their wardrobe meets the wall. It started getting worse after the recent humidity, and my youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that clears up during the day. Is this black mold dangerous and what’s the safest way to get rid of it with kids in the house?

The type of mold is critical. Many dark-colored molds are not the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), but any mold in a child's bedroom can cause the symptoms you describe—congestion, coughing, and irritation that often improve when they leave the room. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue where cool interior walls from constant AC meet warm, humid air, creating condensation behind furniture.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. First, have everyone leave the room. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution. Let it dry completely. Crucially, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation and prevent recurrence.

If the mold returns quickly, is larger than a square meter, or you see evidence of a water leak, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source (like a hidden pipe leak or rising damp) and perform lab testing to identify the exact species, which dictates the remediation protocol. This is the safest approach to ensure the environment is healthy for children.
