Black mold from AC vent: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell, and I just found patches of black fuzzy stuff around the ceiling vent in my bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I'm worried it's making us all feel tired and stuffy. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Black mould around AC vents is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The damp smell and symptoms like fatigue and congestion are consistent with exposure to microbial growth.
DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discolouration on non-porous materials but does not kill the mould roots inside porous drywall or ceiling tiles. It can also aggravate spores, making them airborne. For a small, visible patch (under 1 sq. ft), you can carefully wipe the vent cover with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg; the main colony is likely inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which requires professional equipment to address. Given you’ve had symptoms for two years, this indicates a persistent issue that necessitates a professional inspection. Dubai's climate means the AC system itself is the primary source of moisture and needs to be evaluated. A certified inspector will use borescopes to examine duct interiors and often recommend lab analysis to identify the mould species, as some types require specific remediation protocols. They can also identify the root cause, such as a clogged condensate drain line or insufficient insulation, to prevent rapid recurrence. For health safety and a permanent solution, calling a professional with the tools for proper containment and removal is the most effective course of action. |
