Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. I’m worried about our health and the damage to the walls, but I have no idea what this will cost to fix properly. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or should I call a professional mold remediation company, and if so, what’s a rough estimate I should expect for a small area like this?

Black mold in a Dubai villa closet is a common issue, primarily driven by the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. While it may be tempting to tackle it yourself, the root cause is often hidden moisture within the wall cavity that simple surface cleaning won't address.

For a small, visible patch, you can attempt to clean it with a vinegar solution (more effective on porous surfaces than bleach) and improve air circulation with a dehumidifier. However, if the mold returns quickly—which is likely given the climate—the moisture source is still active. This indicates a deeper problem, such as a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or moisture wicking from the foundation.

Professional remediation is strongly advised for recurring mold or if the area is larger than one square meter. A proper fix involves identifying and eliminating the hidden moisture source, not just the visible growth. In Dubai, reputable companies should follow international guidelines like the IICRC S520. Expect a process that includes containment of the area, HEPA filtration, safe removal of affected materials, and antimicrobial treatment. The cost for a small closet can vary significantly based on the extent of the damage behind the wall, but a proper, guaranteed remediation for a localized area is a professional job. The most critical step is the initial inspection to diagnose the hidden moisture problem; without solving that, the mold will return.
