Black shower grout: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black over the last couple of months. It’s in a corner that never really dries out, and I’ve noticed a damp, earthy smell getting stronger, especially when the AC isn't running. I've tried spraying bleach cleaner, but it just comes back a week later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it for good?

Black shower grout is almost certainly mold, thriving on the constant moisture and lack of sunlight in that corner. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the roots penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly in Dubai's humid climate.

For a small area, you can attempt a targeted DIY approach. Use a dedicated grout mold remover containing potassium hydroxide or hydrogen peroxide, not just chlorine bleach. Scrub it into the grout lines with a stiff brush, let it dwell for the recommended time, and rinse thoroughly. The key is to then address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and use a squeegee on the walls. A small dehumidifier can help if the damp smell persists.

However, if the mold returns despite these efforts, the issue is likely deeper. The damp, earthy smell you describe suggests possible moisture penetration behind the tiles, which a surface clean cannot fix. In these cases, the grout may need to be professionally removed and replaced, and the wall inspected for hidden damage. Professional remediation, backed by a microbiology lab’s analysis, identifies the exact species and the source of the moisture to provide a permanent solution, not just a temporary clean. Given the description of a persistent, recurring problem with an accompanying odor, a professional assessment is the most reliable course of action.
