How to clean and prevent closet mold from humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom closet started leaking a bit during the last humid spell, and now I've spotted patches of black mold on the inside of the adjacent wardrobe where we keep our clothes. I'm worried it's going to spread and ruin everything. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back with the summer humidity?

First, address the leak. The AC condensate drain line is likely clogged, which is common in Dubai's high humidity. Unclogging it is the most critical step to stop the moisture source. Check the drain pan and pipe for blockages.
For the existing mold on the wardrobe, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces, a solution of detergent and water can scrub it away. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. Porous items like cardboard or untreated wood may need to be discarded if moldy. For clothes, wash them with a mold-inhibiting detergent. Prevention is about controlling humidity. Ensure the closet isn't overcrowded; allow air to circulate. Leave some space between the wall and your clothes. A small desiccant dehumidifier or moisture absorber placed inside the closet can help significantly, especially during the summer months. Keep the closet door ajar occasionally to equalize humidity with the air-conditioned room. Given the mold is already established and the leak occurred, a professional inspection is wise to assess if hidden growth exists within the AC unit or wall cavity, which is common here. They can also confirm the mold type. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs, like ours, can provide a verified clearance test after cleanup to ensure it's truly resolved. For recurring problems, this diagnostic step is often necessary. |
