Is black AC mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, especially in the mornings, and I’m starting to suspect it’s our AC. I pulled out the filter in our master bedroom unit and the back of it was covered in this black, dusty gunk. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and what should I do first?

Black dust on your AC filter is often a mix of mold spores, dirt, and other allergens that have been pulled from the air. Given Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use, this environment is ideal for mold growth in units that aren't meticulously maintained. The persistent coughing, particularly in the mornings, strongly suggests these airborne irritants could be the cause.

The first step is to replace that filter immediately with a high-quality, allergen-rated one. Then, have a professional conduct a deep cleaning of the entire AC unit and its ductwork to remove the contaminated buildup you can't see. Simply wiping the visible parts won't address spores deeper within the system.

If symptoms persist after a thorough cleaning, consider an indoor air quality test. A lab analysis can identify the specific types of mold present and confirm if they are known respiratory irritants. This is particularly important for children, as their developing respiratory systems are more sensitive. In many villas and older Dubai buildings, this is a recurring issue that requires a consistent maintenance schedule to manage.
