Found mold behind bed, what are immediate health steps?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last two weeks, and it's worse in their bedroom. I just pulled their bed away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold behind it, probably from a small AC leak we fixed months ago. I'm really worried about their breathing and what this exposure has done to them. What are the immediate steps I should take for their health and to get our villa in Al Barsha properly tested?

First, ventilate the room immediately. Open windows and doors to reduce airborne spore concentration, then keep the kids out of that room until it's remediated. For their coughs, a consultation with a paediatrician is wise to rule out any respiratory issues exacerbated by the exposure; mention the mold discovery. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use can cause condensation leaks that lead to hidden mold growth, especially behind furniture against exterior walls.

For the villa, do not attempt to clean the large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a high volume of spores. The immediate step is to arrange for a professional mold inspection. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping to find the water source (even a fixed leak can leave residual dampness in walls) and air/surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is critical, as some types like Aspergillus are more concerning than others. The inspection will determine the full extent of the contamination, as what's visible is often just a fraction of the actual growth.

In the UAE, reputable companies use a science-driven approach, collecting samples for analysis in a microbiology lab to provide a factual report on the indoor air quality and specific contaminants. This documented evidence is essential for planning an effective remediation strategy, not just a superficial clean. Once the area is professionally treated and the moisture issue is permanently resolved, using a dehumidifier can help maintain a dry environment and prevent recurrence.
