Is black mold in bedroom urgent for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’ve just discovered a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, hidden behind some boxes. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and is it safe for them to sleep in their room tonight?

Yes, this is urgent. The combination of visible black mold and persistent respiratory symptoms in children requires immediate attention. In Dubai's high humidity, hidden mold growth is common and can worsen allergies and asthma.

For tonight, keep the children out of that room if possible. Close the closet door and seal the gap with tape to prevent spore circulation. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is on to help lower humidity levels. Do not attempt to disturb or clean the patch yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.

Professional remediation is strongly advised. The visible patch is likely just the "bloom" of a larger colony, possibly within the wall cavity or under the flooring, especially in villas where construction methods can trap moisture. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts, a small leak, or capillary rise from the slab.

The remediation process involves containment, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and safe removal of contaminated materials. A post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is safe. For families with health symptoms, this is a critical step.
