Remove bathroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally found the source – black mold creeping along the bottom of the wall behind the toilet. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s gotten into the grout. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution from the supermarket, or should I just call one of those professional mold removal companies?

It depends on the extent and location. Surface mold on non-porous tiles, under 1 square foot, can often be handled with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner—never just bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen the problem over time. For porous surfaces like grout or drywall, especially in a humid Jumeirah villa, the risk of it growing deeper is high.
The persistent musty smell is a key indicator the mold may be more than surface-level, potentially growing behind the wall. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for this. If the growth covers more than a 1m x 1m area, is recurring after cleaning, or you suspect hidden growth, a professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls. For confirmed serious cases, remediation by a company with a microbiology lab ensures the species is identified and the root moisture issue is solved, not just the visible growth cleaned. |
