Can I clean closet mold myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and I’m worried the humidity is getting in. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or is it a sign of a bigger issue I need to get my building’s maintenance to look at?

Small black spots in a closet on an exterior wall are a common sign of condensation in Dubai's climate. This is likely surface mold from humid air condensing on the cooler wall.
You can clean small areas (less than one square meter) yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then use a disinfectant like white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution. Ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. However, since the mold is on an exterior wall, the cleaning is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The problem is likely insufficient insulation or a minor leak in the building envelope, allowing humid outdoor air to create condensation on the cooler interior surface. This is a structural issue your building's maintenance team should investigate and repair. For peace of mind, a professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source and the mold type. In many villa communities, strata regulations require owners to address mold issues that could affect building integrity. If the spots return after cleaning or you notice a musty smell, contacting maintenance is the necessary next step to prevent it from becoming a larger problem. |
