Black mold in bedroom closet: should I be worried?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif. The weird thing is, the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about our stored belongings?

Yes, you should be concerned and take action, but avoid panic. The black spots, persistent dampness, and location on an exterior wall in a Dubai villa are classic signs of a condensation issue exacerbated by our climate. The constant AC use creates a temperature differential with the hot exterior wall, leading to moisture buildup—a perfect environment for mold.

Your stored winter clothes, especially natural fibers like wool, are at high risk of contamination and should be professionally cleaned or assessed after the source is addressed.

For a proper inspection, do not settle for a basic visual check. A legitimate inspection involves three key elements: a moisture meter to quantify dampness in the wall, thermal imaging to identify hidden cold spots causing condensation, and most critically, air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab for species identification. This determines the actual health risk and guides the remediation protocol.

In the UAE, reputable companies should operate in line with guidelines like the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) specifications for microbial remediation. While worrying, this is a common issue here. Start by moving belongings away from the wall and improving air circulation in the closet. The solution will likely involve fixing the insulation on that exterior wall to prevent the condensation cycle.
