Should we clean black mold ourselves or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, the one on the outside wall. It wasn't there during my last cleanup a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have exploded. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried it's a bigger issue with the building. Should we tackle this ourselves or is it time to call the building management?

For a small patch of mold that appeared recently, you can clean it yourself, but bleach is not the recommended solution. A mixture of distilled white vinegar and water is more effective at killing the mold and preventing regrowth. However, the key issue in Dubai is addressing the source of moisture, which is almost always condensation from air conditioning or a hidden leak.

Since the mold is on an exterior wall closet, it's highly likely caused by thermal bridging—where the cold AC meets the humid outside air, causing condensation inside the wall. This is a very common building issue here. Wiping the surface mold won't fix the condensation problem, and it will return.

You should inform your building management. Under Dubai regulations, structural issues like potential leaks or inadequate insulation in external walls are typically the responsibility of the building owner. They should send their maintenance team to investigate the wall for moisture and insulation integrity. For your own records, take clear photos of the mold and any dampness before you clean it.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you or family members experience persistent allergies or musty odors, a professional inspection is wise to assess the extent and identify the exact moisture source.
