How to permanently remove and prevent mold in humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of a black, speckled patch I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. Our bedroom always feels more humid than the rest of the apartment, even with the AC running constantly. I've wiped it with bleach but I'm worried it will just come back.
What is the most effective long-term solution to kill the existing mold and prevent it from returning in such a humid room?

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the root cause or kill the mold's structure. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, the moisture source must be identified and controlled for a permanent solution.
Start by identifying the humidity source. Constant AC running can indicate an undersized unit or one not properly dehumidifying. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a cold spot where condensation forms, providing the moisture mold needs. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a hygrometer to monitor the room's humidity; aim to keep it below 60%. For the existing growth, scrubbing with a detergent solution is more effective than bleach for non-porous surfaces. However, if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the backing of the wardrobe, those materials may need to be removed and replaced. The most effective long-term prevention is controlling the moisture. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain lines are clear to promote proper dehumidification. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid winter months. Improve overall ventilation by occasionally opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower. For a case with health symptoms like persistent coughing, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact mold species and the full extent of the problem. They can perform a moisture survey to pinpoint the exact source and recommend targeted solutions, which is critical for ensuring it doesn't return. |
