How to clean and prevent black mold on wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall facing the window in our Deira apartment, and I’m worried it’s from condensation because the AC vent blows right on that spot. What’s the best way to clean this safely and stop it from coming back?

Black spots on a wardrobe are often mold, likely caused by condensation from the AC vent hitting a cooler surface. This is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use, creating the perfect damp environment for mold growth.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water and lightly scrub the area. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push spores deeper into the wall. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the condensation. Redirect the AC vent away from the wardrobe. Improve air circulation in the room by occasionally using a fan and not overfilling the wardrobe. A small dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packets inside the cupboard can help control dampness.

If the mold covers more than a square foot, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates a more significant moisture issue within the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to find the hidden source. For verification, a lab test can confirm the mold type and any associated health risks, which is particularly important for households with allergies or respiratory conditions.
