Bathroom grout black again after cleaning, need professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has started turning black, and there's a constant damp smell even though we run the exhaust fan. I've tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back after a few days, especially since the weather has been so humid lately. Is this something I can handle with a stronger cleaning product from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Recurring black grout and a persistent damp smell indicate a mold issue that bleach cannot resolve. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it doesn't kill the root structure of mold penetrating porous grout, and the moisture source remains.

In Dubai's high humidity, especially with bathroom steam and year-round AC use, condensation creates a perfect environment for mold regrowth. The constant smell suggests the mold may be behind the tiles or under the flooring, which a surface clean cannot address.

For a villa in Jumeirah, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters to locate hidden dampness and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the correct remediation protocol. Proper remediation involves removing the affected grout, treating the subsurface, and ensuring the area is completely dry before re-grouting with a mold-inhibiting product. They will also verify your exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room's size and venting correctly, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines.
