Is black mold in my closet urgent?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif. I'm not sure if it's been there a while and we missed it, or if it just appeared. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with vinegar?

Black mold in your closet requires attention but isn't always a code-red emergency. The urgency depends on its size and whether it's actively growing. A few small spots you just noticed in a Mirdif villa suggest a recent moisture issue, likely from the external wall.
In Dubai's climate, exterior walls can develop condensation due to the extreme temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the intense outdoor heat. This creates a perfect, hidden environment for mold. You can clean a very small area (under one square foot) yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. Wear a mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. However, the critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. DIY cleaning is temporary if the underlying problem persists. Given the mold is on an external wall, the cause could be a minor thermal bridge, a tiny leak, or trapped humidity. A professional inspection can pinpoint this exact source using moisture meters and thermal imaging, which is essential for a permanent fix. For any visible growth larger than a square foot, or if you or family members have respiratory sensitivities, professional assessment and remediation is strongly advised to ensure it's handled safely and thoroughly. |
