How to stop bedroom mold in humid Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom in my Jumeirah apartment has been feeling really humid lately, and I just spotted a few small black spots in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. We run the AC constantly, but it still feels damp, and I'm worried it's the start of a mold problem, especially with the summer humidity coming. What’s the most effective way to stop this from spreading, and should I get a dehumidifier or is there a specific AC setting I should be using to keep the moisture down?

Black spots at the wall-ceiling junction in a humid Jumeirah apartment are a classic sign of condensation mold, common here due to the high outdoor humidity and cold AC surfaces. The most effective immediate step is to wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, then dry it thoroughly to prevent regrowth.

For a persistent issue, a dehumidifier can help, but addressing the AC is often more critical. Set your AC to a slightly higher temperature (around 22-24°C) to reduce the extreme temperature differential that causes condensation. Ensure it's set to "cool" mode, not "dry" mode, as the latter can sometimes be less effective at managing humidity in our climate. Most importantly, verify your AC unit is draining properly; a clogged drain pan is a frequent source of hidden moisture.

If the spots return quickly, spread, or if you detect a musty odor, the mold growth is likely more extensive behind the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to identify the hidden source of dampness, which could be a minor leak or insufficient insulation. For verification, a lab analysis can identify the mold type, which is important for assessing health risks and determining the correct remediation method, as some treatments require specific antimicrobials.
