Is small closet mold urgent with pregnant wife?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small black patch of mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s been incredibly humid lately, and the room always feels damp. My wife is pregnant and I'm starting to worry about her health. How urgent is it that we get this professionally removed, and is it something we can handle ourselves first?

The urgency is high given your wife's pregnancy. Mold exposure can heighten allergy symptoms and, with certain species, pose risks during pregnancy. A small patch often indicates a larger moisture issue, especially in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create condensation.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. However, this only addresses visible growth. The underlying cause is trapped humid air and a possible cold spot from the AC, which will cause it to return.

Given the health context, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of dampness you can't see. A lab test can also identify the mold species to confirm the risk level. Remediation then involves correcting the humidity issue—often through better ventilation or a dehumidifier—and safely removing the contaminated material. Look for a provider certified by the Dubai Municipality or with documented before-and-after testing to ensure it’s done properly.
