Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or professional removal cost?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa always feels damp, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. This must have been building up over the last few months since we haven't opened that side since winter. I’m worried it’s spreading to the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or should I just call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai, and if so, what’s a rough cost I should expect for a single room?

That damp closet with fuzzy spots on clothes is a classic sign of a humidity issue, very common in villas here. With the high ambient humidity and year-round AC use, condensation can easily build up in poorly ventilated spaces like closets on exterior walls.

For a small, surface-level issue on non-porous materials, a thorough DIY clean with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth) and a dedicated dehumidifier can work. However, your mention of it feeling damp for months and possibly spreading to the walls suggests a more entrenched problem. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and wood, which surface cleaning won't address.

In Dubai's climate, the source is often a combination of insufficient ventilation and a minor, unnoticed condensation leak, possibly from an AC duct running near the closet. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source. Without fixing that, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

Costs for remediation vary significantly based on the extent of the contamination. For a single closet that may have affected the wall, expect a process involving containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and potentially replacing damaged backing or drywall. Reputable companies provide a detailed scope of work and cost after an on-site assessment. Always verify they follow DM guidelines for remediation and can provide post-clearance testing from an independent lab to confirm the space is truly resolved.
