Is black mold behind wardrobe dangerous for my newborn?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. I'm worried it's from the AC unit, and I'm tempted to just wipe it down with vinegar, but with a newborn in the house, I'm getting nervous. Is this a DIY job or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Black mold behind a wardrobe can be a health concern, especially with a newborn. The species commonly found in homes, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, are irritants that can worsen allergies and asthma, and infants have developing respiratory systems. The real risk depends on the mold type and extent, which isn't verifiable without a lab test.
In Dubai’s humid climate with year-round AC use, this is a classic scenario. The cold wall behind the wardrobe creates a condensation point the AC can’t dry, providing the constant moisture mold needs to thrive. Simply wiping with vinegar is a temporary fix; it will return if the moisture source isn't addressed. For a newborn in the house, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact species through culturing and, more critically, locate and diagnose the moisture source—whether it's AC condensate leakage, a pipe seepage, or inadequate insulation. DIY attempts can disturb the spores, potentially spreading them further. A proper remediation plan will include containing the area, removing the contaminated material, and implementing solutions to prevent recurrence, like improving ventilation or addressing the thermal bridge on that wall. |
