Is AC mold causing my sinus issues in JVC?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past month, and I've started getting terrible sinus headaches and a constant stuffy nose. I finally took a look inside the unit and found patches of black and green fuzzy stuff around the vents and insulation. I’m really worried this is making us sick. What’s the best way to get this professionally cleaned and who should I call for a proper inspection?

Black and green fuzzy growth in your AC unit, combined with the damp smell and your sinus symptoms, are strongly correlated. The humid Dubai climate creates constant condensation in AC systems, making them a prime breeding ground for mould. The spores being blown into your JVC apartment can absolutely cause the sinus headaches and congestion you're describing.
For a situation with visible growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is the necessary first step. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. In Dubai, look for a provider that uses a borescope inspection to see deep inside the ductwork and offers lab analysis to identify the mould species. This evidence-based approach is critical. The remediation process should involve containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces, and antimicrobial treatment of the coils and ducts. Simply spraying a fragrance is ineffective. After remediation, request post-cleaning verification, such as ATP testing or another air quality test, to confirm the spore count has been reduced to a safe level. For ongoing prevention, maintaining indoor humidity below 60% and ensuring your AC drain line is not clogged are essential in our climate. |
