Urgent to remove black mold with toddler nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. I’m guessing it’s from the high humidity we had last month. My main concern is my toddler who sleeps in the next room. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with vinegar this weekend?

A patch of black mould in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity. With a toddler nearby, it's sensible to be concerned.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover is effective; bleach only removes the colour, not the root structure. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning. The immediate health risk for your toddler from a small, contained patch is generally low, but it can cause irritation like a runny nose or exacerbate allergies.

However, the fact it's on an exterior wall is the critical detail. This often indicates a condensation issue or, more seriously, a potential leak within the wall cavity from the driving rain we occasionally get. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface symptom, not the hidden moisture source. The mould will almost certainly return if the underlying problem isn't fixed.

Given the hidden nature of the potential moisture source and the toddler in the home, a professional inspection is a prudent step. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to check the wall for dampness you can't see. This identifies if it's simple condensation or a more serious breach that needs repair. For definitive identification, a lab test can confirm the mould species, which is the only way to rule out more hazardous types like Stachybotrys. Addressing the root cause is the only way to ensure it doesn't recur and affect your indoor air quality long-term.
